Syphilis is an STI that is spread by the bacterium treponema pallidum and the 4 phases of syphilis are primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary.

In the primary phase the symptoms and signs are the appearance of a painless open ulcer called chancre that is present on the genitals, mouth, skin, rectum, or vagina. The appearance of chancre usually occurs about three weeks after infection, but it may appear later (CDC).
