Monkeys, also known as simians, are basal Haplorhini and are considered a sister of the Tarsiiformes. They are mostly called intelligent and responsive. According to Marilyn A Norconk and team, new world’s monkeys emerged within the simians nearly 30 million years ago, and the old world’s monkeys emerged within the catarrhine over 20 million years ago. Lorises, galago, and lemurs should not be confused with monkeys since they possess their unique characteristics. Monkeys range in size from 114 millimeters to 200 millimeters, having a 170-millimeter long tail and their weight is something from 3 oz to 4 oz (Norconk et al. 3). Monkeys are present in almost all parts of the world, and most of their species are said to be non-vulnerable.
Just like other primates, monkeys are being threatened, and many of their species are at the risk of disappearing from the face of the Earth. The core issue is that the survival of mankind’s closest relatives has become difficult due to manmade things and activities. The first comprehensive review in ten years of the world’s 500 kinds of primates including monkeys found that nearly 40 percent of all primates are in danger of going extinct. The core threats are air pollution, lack of food, habitat destruction, and others. Human beings burn and clear tropical forests that emit nearly 25 percent of the greenhouse gases leading to climate changes; the hunting of monkeys for food and wildlife trade is also at its peak. Populations of leaf monkeys and gibbons have dwindled because of rampant habitat loss exacerbated by hunting for food. In Chinese medicines, according to Serge Wich and team, the flesh of monkeys is extensively used, which is why they are at the risk of vanishing in coming years (Wich et al. 179).
Monkeys constitute a big part of animal species, and they play an integral role in the ecosystem. The biodiversity of this planet is likely to be impacted if monkeys and other primates are not protected. With a lot of focus on the significance of biodiversity both economically and ecologically, there is a strong need to reverse the downward trend in species loss, especially for monkeys and apes whose loss can lead to negative impacts on the environment. The very simple thing every human being should understand is monkeys contribute to the sustainable environment and are an integral part of the biodiversity, so their extinction means the survival of human beings and other species may become impossible. A number of animal welfare organizations aim to raise awareness among the people regarding the role of primates in ecosystem or biodiversity.
