The Skin of Our Teeth pre-performance paper
Ben Stockman directed the play The Skin of our Teeth by Thornton Wilder and focused on a world that is chaotic. The dark comedy further mainly focused on a couple and their two children, who had witnessed walls of ice, catastrophic floods and war in different eras. In the post-apocalyptic world, the actors, actresses. the classic American create a world where absurdity is common the play parodies the image of a nuclear family and human history is repetitive, but history does not occur in a circular form.
The style of production is also prioritized in the comedy-drama as the dramatic work is in the form of farce and burlesque. When creating the play the different elements to represent the diverse lifespan will be represented and the different stakeholders work together to ensure there is a seamless transition in the scenes. The production will combine satire where history and chaos are closely linked. Since the aim is to make the audience laugh by exaggerating the situation that the family faces having lived for many years where the ancient man is also a modern man (Wilder 69).
In the performance, the designer has to consider the physical environment, including the custom, sound and lighting design. The lighting plays an important role in the performance juxtaposing the different colors to signal the ice, different landscapes and floods, while the costume designer captures the shifting alliances and evolution over time (Raymond 147).
