The Cite Abstract Expressionism painting by Ellsworth Kelly is a masterpiece. This oil wood painting, whose dimensions are (143.51cm×179.71cm×4.45cm) presented in simple strokes of black and white is a sight to behold. Many things may have been said about it but the best description that would be ascribed to this painting is: magnificent!
This painting which was created in 1951 has withstood the test of time as an all-time classic. It is classified as an Abstract Expressionism painting. Abstract expressionism was a post-World War 2 American style of painting developed in Ney York in the mid 20th century. It was typified through its trademark gestural brush-strokes. When looked at first, one can easily notice the mark-making,which is somehow a clear indication of spontaneity. In the painting, the white background perfectly contrasts with the painted black bands. Traditionally, black is a color associated with mystery, power, elegance and formality. White on the other hand is a color of safety, purity and perfection. Therefore, a combination of these two colors unleashes the persona of Kelly as that of a mysterious perfect gentleman with a sophisticated touch of elegance.
It is worth noting that the strokes in the painting are purely horizontal and diagonal strokes with the only variation being their sizes. Some are shy thin while some are bolder and thicker, though we also have some of medium size. These portray the free variant spirit in the persona that yearns to roam and explore the world. The horizontal strokes may be an expression of docility in the persona. In this case docility does not necessarily mean the absence of action, but a state of letting go and imbibing nature as it presents itself in its many forms. This is many instances is the means by which artists get impressions which they present to the world in the variety of art forms available.
In fact, Ellsworth Kelly reinforces this assertion when he says that he got the inspiration to the Cite painting in a dream while he was staying at Cite Universitaire. He talks of how he had dreamt of this particular style of art. The diagonal bands on the other hand may imply either shiftiness in the spirit of the persona or even a state of discontent.
He will not just lie down...
