Summary
Maus
Maus is a comic book about the Holocaust. It was published in 1980. It is a humorous story of the events that happened in different races and nationalities. The story indicates different races and nationalities, whereby different types of animals represent them. For instance, the Jews are represented by the mice and the Germans by a cat. As well, Maus consists of two critical primary narratives that happen in equal measure. The first narrative is done by Vladek Spiegelman. He communicates to his son through an interview about events that happened to him during the Holocaust. The events begin from pre-war in Poland including tracking his life for over ten years, not forgetting the period he got married to his beautiful wife, Anja, in 1937, and the life experience he gained from Auschwitz as well as eventual immigration to Sweden after the war. The second narrative focuses on a troubled and conflicted relationship with his father. The conflicting relationship happened between 1978 and 1982. The narrative as well highlights Art Spiegelman’s interviews with his father concerning the Holocaust.
‘Jack and the Box’

Art Spiegelman uses out-of-the-box thinking to write that has all the wonders and bounce of a ‘Jack and the Box’. Different opportunities were offered to Jack, but not all surprises suited his demand. For instance, he wanted to play with his new toy, but the toy was not ready to play or even come out of the box even after the first request. These are the twists and turns analyzed in this essay, including the similarities and differences.
Similarities
Art Spiegelman, as the writer of both books, understands that children like colors a lot. He tries to make use of colors hence making it interesting and attractive for his readers. For instance, in ‘Jack and the Box’ he uses blue and orange while on Maus he uses dense shading instead hence being able to communicate his tone. Doherty states that colors create a famous scene whereby people get attracted to viewing what is happening on the pictures, even without reading (69).
Another similarity is concerning the tone and mood of the two books. ‘Jack and the Box’ readers feel commanding and sympathetic tone when Jack and Zack talk to each other. Doherty indicates that Jack becomes too rude to the point that Jack gives up and pretends not to bother at all (71). Desire to play and achieve more of his goals; Jack keeps on knocking at the box commanding Zack to come out so they may play and he feels disappointed all time. On the other side, Maus’s tone and mood indicate an overall historical background of what happened during the Holocaust. As well, Maus tones represent that of personal experiences, and readers find it deep as reading continues.
As well, Art Spiegelman uses cartoons to communica...
