In movies and other literary work, the authors' primary role is to hook the audience to the story in the book or the movie. Many literary devices have been employed by authors to capture the attention of viewers and readers, one of such devices is foreshadowing. In foreshadowing, a writer hints at what is to come later in the story, in most cases foreshadowing comes in the early chapters of a book or early scenes of a movie. Writers can create foreshadowing through dreams, actual dialogue and other actions in a chapter or a scene. In the movie ‘The Shawshank Redemption' directed by Darabont, foreshadowing is one of the literary devices that has been used.
In the movie, a ‘dream' has been used to predict what happens later in the movie. Andy Dufresne tells Red a dream that is unlikely to be a reality. In Andy's mind, he hopes of living in a small town in Mexico, something Red believes is impossible. Instead, Red tells him that whatever he was saying wasw a shitty pipe dream; this was to predict Andy's escape through the sewer line. In Red's mind, the walls of the prison enclosing the inmates were also to control the thoughts of the inmates; which means the inmates were only to think of their situation in the jail.
