The Forever Queen by Helen Hollick
The Forever Queen is about the career journey of a Norman lady, Emma. The narration covers from the time she gets married at thirteen years to Anglo- Saxon Aethelredth in 1002 up to the death of her son Hartha Cnut who was a king of Denmark and England in 1042 (Hollick). Upon the death of her husband Aethelred, Emma marries the Danish invader Cnut and had two sons and two daughters. From these children, two kings are found while the girls were wives to the Holy Roman Emperor and lords of Mantes and Boulogne. This leads to plenty of materials in her doorstop. What is poised to continue into at least a trilogy leading up to Hastings. Being a minor character, we do not get young bastard Duke of Normandy, who is Emma's great-nephew.
The storytelling of the book rarely misses a beat. The author is a master at making each historical scene to be comic and live in the mind of the character. Besides, the author makes the chapters short for pacing and allows the reader to hurry with an urge to read more, keeping light on for just another page. The point of view hopping works to her favor despite being rare in the US. She utilizes descriptive prose to accomplish her work, where she leaves the reader feeling they are experiencing the book for the first time.
