Early Medieval Paper
The Lindisfarne Gospels is an insular script that offers many Celtic-style decorative elements of the gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John and was created in 7th and 8th century CE. Ideally, the book is considered the perfect example of the Kingdom’s unique style of religious art and a style that facilitates the themes of the early Biblical art. The Lindisfarne evangelist portrait of St. Mark represented the second evangelist St. Mark and is also accompanied by his traditional symbol which is a lion. Besides, the lion was considered as a great deal more than other early medieval animal figures and it symbolized the triumphant resurrection of Christ. On the other side, the Folio 56 of the Borgia Codex is part of the pre-Colombian codices that constitute Borgia Group and was painted in the Mixteca-Puebla style by scribes who lives in the modern Mexican states.
The evangelist portrait of St. Mark remains among the greatest pieces of art of medieval European painting and is considered as Insular art. One primary stylistic characteristic of the Lindisfarne evangelist portrait of St. Mark is the Zoomorphic style which includes the use of interlaces animal patterns which is represented by the lion in this St. Mark’s portrait. Additionally, this image offers more information about the Celtic religious systems that believed in life after death this is represented by how the lion symbolized the resurrection of the Christ.
