An Analysis If Beasts Of The Southern Wild And It Happened One Night

Essay Instructions:

Focus your essay on two films that are “in dialog with each other” about an issue both movies raise... One of your films should be from the list below, and the other could be any movie we have discussed in class. Then write an essay comparing/contrasting how each movie presents the shared issue and discussing what conclusion each movie leads us to draw about that issue. Aim for a 4-5-page essay, typed and double-spaced. To do this essay, you will need to select from each movie a plotline in which the shared issue is addressed (It need not be the movie's main plotline) and to identify which characters in that plotline are most centrally involved with your issue. Remember to identify plotlines either in a question or in a statement (or in both) as described in the handout on story. From each movie, select a few scenes from the relevant plotline that best illustrate how the movie presents the issue and what the movie seems to want us to think about the issue. Early scenes in a plotline often establish the movie's attitude towards or perspective on the issue(s) being raised. Scenes that conclude a plotline are often important in encouraging us to develop an opinion about the issue(s) raised in that plotline. As you discuss those key scenes from each movie, explain how on screen details of film drama and cinematic technique work to present the issue, to shape how we understand or respond to the issue, and/or to make a particular point or lead us to a particular conclusion about the issue. Be sure to make clear what this conclusion is for each movie.

Movie A: Beasts of the Southern Wild
The movie revolves around the Bathtub community which lives in deplorable conditions. The residents of the city are prone to roaming danger, and this is evidenced by the floods in the entire town the whole night. The poor state of the community does not give them the opportunity to have preventive measures against calamities and natural disasters. We see this pointed out by Hushpuppy when she sets the village on fire. Growing up in such an environment shapes Hushpuppy character into fending for herself at a young age. She does not show her emotions, and this takes a toll on her. Wink leaves her alone when he goes to search for medical care, and she, therefore, has to learn to survive for the days that he is away. The absence of familial security and love instills in her a character that fears to be loved and heard.
The use of narration plays a significant role in creating a human connection with the film. The audience can empathize with Hushpuppy as the narrative blends well with the music to build up her character. The narration aspect of symbolism illusionists the theme of human development and its importance in developing emotions. Behn uses the idea of the Bathtub to zoom in into the isolation of the people in the community. This technique allows the audience to feel the emotion and be part of the story, see the web of the universe and the desolation of a forgotten community. The use of low angle shots to convey a different message is very impressive. The audience is given a chance to see the world from a different perspective, that is, view everything from Hushpuppy's point of view. Children have a very clear, bright image of how the world should be, but in her eyes, this is different. Focusing the camera on her and making the world see what she sees stood out in showcasing the depths of poverty. Being subjected to see much at such a tender age, Hushpuppy learns that there is a need to control her emotion as the world is full of surprises. Despite the challenges, Hushpuppy fac...
