The ‘Fairview’ by Jackie Sibblies Drury
The Fairview is an award-winning play that I can relate with as a brown American struggling to fit in. It is difficult to be black but even harder to be a half cast because you are in the middle belonging in limbo, especially in racial conversations. Growing up, I have witnessed many levels of omission, including the census that has no brown people category while it is also challenging to identify a black or white. Fair view written by Jackie Sibblies Drury speaks to me, and many others discriminated against and asked the hard questions for us. What starts as a regular family comedy-drama drastically breaks loose and opens up the delegated topic of race. The play is a literal request for the whites to allow other races to shine and speak for themselves. The show made me and several other people anxious and uncomfortable, but this made is unforgettable and led to critical thinking. The play is close to my heart, and the author accomplishes what she sets out to do with excellent characters, plot, and handling of conflicts.
The plot of the play is creatively in three dimensions that lead to a dramatic ending. The first act shows the Frazer family preparing for a birthday. As I stated earlier, the scenes of the play are calm, and a newcomer in the world of theatre would rate it as a typical family comedy-drama.
