Social workers are an integral part of every community. They bridge the gap by helping those who are in vulnerable positions in society. To some extent, social workers bridge the gap between the vulnerable and the able to ensure that those who are at a point of disadvantage are not left behind. The video, Working together for the mental wellbeing of BME communities, highlights the plight of one of the vulnerable groups in society, the elderly, as well as what needs to be done to ensure that their issues are adequately addressed.
Ideally, the video centers its focus on the Chinese community living in the United Kingdom, particularly in the region of Barnet. The video starts by highlighting a report presented by Barnet Primary Trust Care in 2009, which established that the elderly Chinese living in Barnet believe that there is not enough information pertaining to their wellbeing and the social care services that they should be receiving. The report states that these individuals have been left to take care of themselves, which makes it difficult for them considering their age. The video highlights some examples, such as that of Koonshin Yang, an elderly Chinese man who lives alone and struggles to perform some of the necessary tasks.
