Without The Internet Is It Possible To Live Fully In The Modern World?
The Internet can be defined as a global network system connecting millions of computers and other devices across the world using Internet protocol. The Internet is accessed anywhere using a modulator-demodulator and telecommunications line, and it comes to the device by modifying analogue telephone signals to digital computer signals. The invention of Internet is attributed to several benefits in the society but we cannot ignore the disadvantages. According to King (2010), in the modern world, the internet has become one of the most exciting and powerful tools. It is gradually gaining personal priority over other things hence becoming everyone’s friend (Oussama et al., 201). Even though it is hard to imagine our lives without the Internet, as the human race, we should be quite sure that we would adapt and persevere as we have done for centuries.
Outline
The Internet provides its users with a bulk of facility to use such as the search engines, E-mails and web portals and informative websites access. This paper discusses the meaning of the Internet, introduces the use of the Internet, and discusses the background information by providing evidence on its existence and statistics from its use over the years. The paper also explains that it would be hard to communicate, transact businesses and access records and information in the absence of the Internet and provides both counterarguments and refutations for the three arguments. Finally, the paper provides conclusion and recommendations for future purposes.
Background Information
The first ever recorded description that represented social interactions and could have been enabled via networking consisted of series of memos that were written by J.C.R. Licklider from MIT in late 1962, and it discussed "Galactic Network" idea he devised. Licklider then visualized a global network series of computers and through which all members of the society could access data as well as programs with ease from any website (Taky, 2013). In the same spirit, this concept was similar to the modern day Internet. Additionally, the cold war played a significant role in the development of the Internet. During this period, the Soviet Union's launched the Sputnik satellite, and this spurred the U.S. Defense Department work on improving and modernising its information dissemination methods. This situation led to the innovation of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET). This is now the network that evolved to what we refer to as the Internet. On 1st January 1983, the new Internet we have was born. New standard ways of computer Internet communicating were developed known as the Internetwork Protocol (IP) or Transfer Control Protocol. As at March 2017, 49.6% of the world population which is 3,739 Million people used the Internet as compared to 0.4 % population which used the Internet by December 1995 which was the same as 16 million people across the world. This means there is a 400% growth in Internet use since 1995 (Drum, n.d).
