Essay Instructions:

You should use the problem-solution structure for your essay. This means that your essay should identify a problem and a solution's related to the topic you are given and evaluate the solution/s you identify.
You should address the essay topic in the content that you write and you should also use correct spelling and grammar for your essay.
You should use four to five sources for your essay, at least one that is academic. These should be correctly referenced in your essay according to the Harvard Guide. You should provide a reference list at the end of your essay.
Your essay should be about 900 words long.




 




2019 1 LANG 2044: Project Task 1: Problem – Solution Essay Length: approximately 900 words. This is one of two tasks for your Project. It counts 60% of your Project mark. This task is based on earlier class discussions and preparation of: How to write a paragraph How to structure Essays Especially, how to structure Problem-Solution Essays Write a problem solution essay on the topic below. Advances in technology and jobs Evidence suggests that advances in technology severely curtail the range and amount of jobs available in certain industries. Explain why this might be so and what specific industries might be affected in this way. RESEARCH PREPARATION You need to use 4-5 references for this essay: see below a. Try to find at least one peer-reviewed journal article on your topic. b. Try to find (from the internet) a serious newspaper/magazine article from at least one of: Time Magazine, Newsweek, The Economist, the Washington Post, The Times (of London), The Guardian newspaper (UK). c. Use one or two reliable sources written in at least one other language (Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean, Bahasa Malaysia, Persian, Arabic, etc). If you use sources from other languages you will need to translate key information (including references) from the other sources you use, into English. When you cite follow either APA, or Harvard (or another referencing style), make sure that you stick to one style consistently. Three or Four Paragraphs for the Body of the essay: approx. 600 words together. i. Remember the structure for each of the paragraphs in the body of an essay: a. Topic sentence b. Expand or explain the topic sentence c. Provide examples d. Provide evidence 2019 3 e. Transition to next paragraph 3. A concluding paragraph: approx. 100-125 words i. Remember the structure of the conclusion. a. This must include a brief summary of the problem and solution/s, and your evaluation of how effective or adequate is/are the solutions. MORE TIPS Cohesion: try to think of how you will ensure cohesion i. Referring back: using pronouns; alternative words for the subject or object in the previous sentence ii. Transition words: therefore, so, however, in addition, furthermore, etc. iii. Signalling words: first, firstly; second, secondly; then, in conclusion, to conclude; to sum up, to summarise, in summary, etc. Remember to PLAN YOUR ESSAY before you draft and edit it: Use the Spelling and Grammar check online (carefully). The exponential growth rate in technology recorded in the past decades promises more exciting technological advancement in the future. However, the advancement comes along with both positive and negative impacts to the society. In business, for example, technological tools have made communication easier, improved effectiveness and efficiencies, amplified business operations, enhanced innovation, and customer satisfaction (Choi & Baker, 2017). However, technology has led to security concerns, decreased interpersonal communication as well as increased expenses on acquisition and training (Cascio & Montealegre, 2016). Similarly, artificial intelligence, automation and other innovations associated with technology are altering some aspects of work. Currently, fears and concerns around the impact of technology on employment have been rampant. Even though technology has the potential to create job opportunities, more jobs have been lost in the past, today and probably in the future.
Today, the job market is unstable due to increased invention and automation. According to Fossen & Sorgner (2019), as the labor market becomes automated many professions face significant changes. In reality, there is a growing division in job opportunities between high and low skills jobs, increased job loss and underemployment particularly among the youths, deteriorating earnings for many households as well as income inequality. Research shows that in 2018, over 1 billion people were unemployed across the world. Most of the occupations that can be replaced with digital technologies are at higher risk of becoming obsolete. According to Cascio & Montealegre (2016), 47% of the United States workforce hold jobs that are likely to be substituted by technologies in the next ten years. Similarly, Goos et al. (2010), argued that the invention of robots and machines reduced the need for raw human strength hence the increased rates of unemployment. For example, automation information technology, and personal computing either eliminated or reduced the demand for some professions such as manufacturing workers, typists, telephone operators, telemarketers, travel agents to mention a few.
Although technologies such as artificial intelligence and information technology bring increased productivity, efficiencies, safety, and convenience to organizations, the technologies pose substantial risks to jobs, income and the nature of work (Waheed, 2017). Typically, the labor market is under pressure and skills and talent are often underutilized owing to automation and digitization. Unemployment and underemployment across the world are becoming high and widespread. For example, In the European countries and the United States, over 285 million adults are not employed and at least 100 million would like to work more. According to Fossen & Sorgner (2019), between 30-45% of the labor force across the world is underutilized.
