This assessment is due on Monday 13 January 2020 at 1pm and is worth 60% of the mark for the module.

This assessment is composed of two parts.

For the first part, you must select one of the following disciplines: Applied Linguistics and Communication (week 7), Philosophy (week 8), or Psychosocial Studies (week 9).

You are required to write an 800-word critical reflection on the selected discipline.

A critical reflection is an exercise in which you are asked to write about one of the disciplines you have been introduced to and your own response to it. In it you should aim to provide answers to the following questions, with reference to the relevant lectures and materials covered in the module.

1. Why have I chosen to write about the selected discipline? Based on the lecture and materials on this discipline, why do you find it interesting or challenging or engaging? Why is the study of the selected discipline relevant to you at this particular moment?

2. What is the approach the selected discipline uses to study the world? In your understanding from the lecture, workshops and reading materials from the module, what is the focus of this discipline? And what are the methods the discipline uses to study the world?

3. Why do I think the discipline is important to society? Based on your learning during the lecture, workshops and reading materials, how do you think the selected discipline contributes to our understanding of the world today? Does this discipline’s perspective or focus bring important aspects or issues to light? How does it improve our understanding of the world?

4. What impact has it had on me? Based on the lecture, workshops and reading materials, what have you learned about this discipline in this module? Has it changed the way you think about the world? Has it made you think about specific problems in a different way? If so, explain how and why.

Critical Reflection on Psychosocial Studies
I choose to critically reflect on psychosocial studies (week 9) because of its powerful impact on how I view the interaction between self and society. This discipline has enhanced my understanding of human behavior and helped me become more competent to take roles in HR management, teaching, social work, health, and criminal justice. The discipline also equipped me with important psychological and sociological concepts. Overall, I am now more knowledgeable about individual and group behavior.
The psychosocial studies discipline is interesting because it elucidates what distinguishes nature and nurture. Similarly, this discipline describes how psychosocial concepts apply to health, education, and other areas (Woodward, 2015, p. 3). This discipline is also interesting because it helps in understanding how people react to various issues experienced in the world. For instance, governments are expected to respond to disasters in a more humane manner because of the psychological intricacies involved (Kaye & Quinn, 2019). The discipline also covers group behavioral dynamics, which is unavoidable in modern societies. Psychosocial studies are important today because they cover pertinent issues touching on the individual and societies in general. Indeed, in today’s society, the physical and mental functioning of individuals contributes to the health of society. This discipline enables one to understand the role of mental and emotional wellbeing in coping with the challenges in one’s environment.
This discipline uses a distinct approach to studying the world. According to Woodward, (2015, p. 143), affect is an important concept in psychosocial studies. Affect denotes the idea that humans influence others while their behavior is affected in the course of interacting with others. Interpersonal relationships reflect exploration, expression, and encouragement of affect (Sbarra & Coan, 2018). Interpersonal problems are linked to the individual’s expression or mood, expectations, roles, and feelings, which determine the strength of relationships. It is imperative to manage affect in relationships, which necessitates building interpersonal skills such as communication skills, communication analysis, skills in interpersonal problem-solving, and decision analysis.
From the lecture, reading materials, and workshops, the psychosocial studies discipline focuses on psychoanalysis and psychology, as well as how these help in exploring the individual. Similarly, psychosocial studies center upon sociology and how it helps in understanding broader systemic and cultural issues. Moreover, psychosocial studies focus on the unconscious and irrational processes. Thus, overall, psychosocial studies focus on the interaction between the individual and others in society (Macleod, 2003).
