Introduction
Refugees are people who have taken off from their own countries and crossed international boundary since they lack the protection of the former country. They may not be able to avail themselves of the protection of the country of origin due to certain reasons such as prosecution or on the basis of religion, race, certain social group membership, nationality or due to political opinions. People, who have had the backgrounds of refugees, may have undergone forced migration and prosecution in their home country. In the new country of resettlement, they may have undergone discrimination and social exclusion. This affects the mental health of refugees who present these challenges uniquely from other mental health patients.
Psychologists are the best recommended for mental health refugees recovery. This is because they can deal with a wide range of psychological disorders and post-traumatic stress. They offer to counsel to refugee families who are transiting life from their previous to a new environment that has its own challenges as well. According to the Sacred Heart University, psychologists will help the clients to attain psychological stability. They will help in trauma recovery and help them transition well to healthy family relationships, school and work as well as adapting the new environment.
Psychological counseling is like any other need that most aid groups or nations quickly offers the refugees. It is like food and shelter. When one is given food, they are prevented from starving. They will not freeze to death when offered with shelter. Counseling serves as a remedy for the soul. Refugees especially teenagers are at a higher risk of undergoing depression. They turn out to be abusive and violent, and due to this, the extreme militants take an advantage of this to recruit them (Elizabeth, 2015).
Teenage and children refugees, because of the trauma they have undergone will be steered towards violence due to their cognitive opening (Elizabeth, 2015). When the trauma is left untreated, it can pose security threats. This is because the extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISIS take this advantage to recruit them to join their groups. This can be linked back to the cognitive opening. It is whereby a person starts questioning their understanding of the world and identity. In this case, this is sparked by a past traumatic event. It is due to this cognitive opening that these refugees especially the adolescents are put at risk of being tempted and exploited to anti-social behavior. Post-traumatic effects can cause emotional disturbance to the point that one wants to involve themselves in violent activities such as terrorism.
The results of counseling are uncertain, however, mental health investigation of refugees can have a positive impact that is significant. Those refugees who undergo the treatment of trauma are at a higher chance of attaining cognitive capacity. Through this, they can easily re-build themselves. They are able to move out of the refugee camps and start a stable life outside the camp.
