The presence of hegemony highly affects the international law and the effectivity of its implementation in the involved states. The key ideas of hegemony and international law do not have the same beliefs, goals, and objectives which poses a risk on the implementation of both concepts. These present controversial issues on the laws concerning human rights, laws of peace, globalization, and trade in an international view (Koskenniemi 2004).
There is a dilemma between the concepts of hegemony and international law implementation because of the difference in the belief regarding equality and dominance. Hegemony practices having a dominant state over the others and having various states that accept and compromise in the legal rules and regulations set by the dominant state. This poses a conflict because the hegemonic states find international law too limiting and restraining in comparison to their practices and beliefs (Krisch 2005). International law is a set of established rules based on various treaties and customs of the countries involved promoting peace and prosperity globally. This mediates and acts on the differences of the nations to be able to smoothen and bridge whatever gaps there are, as well as practice balance of power with high regard to justice, equality, and reason.
The international law has idealistic concepts and beliefs but this also has effects acting as a double-edged sword. The international law can promote the use of the power of those states that are capable of exerting more dominance, while it is also capable of promoting that balances the power of the nation involved (Krisch 2005).
