Many nations have realized the significance of innovation in facilitating significant social and economic development. Innovation is defined as “a process the combines science, technology, economics, and management, as it is to achieve novelty and extends from the emergence of the idea to its commercialization in the form of production, exchange, and consumption” (Kogabayev and Maziliauskas 2017, p. 60). In essence, innovation promotes efficiency. To this end, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is one of the major countries in the Middle East region that is setting the pace for innovation. The country’s efforts towards the cause lie in the implementation of free zones as well as the launch of the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation (MBRCGI); these are only two examples among many actions that the government has taken concerning innovation.
The quest for a more innovative nation was begun with the introduction of the free zones in the ‘90s. The primary goal of these regions was to encourage innovation through the formation of forward-thinking enterprises and start-ups in a clustered manner. The most successful governments globally when it comes to innovation have used this model to kick-start their innovation (Hana 2017). These clusters are quite fundamental in attracting flagship multinational tenants that have an exceptional track record of innovation. When they settle in these specific demographics, they attract not only new talent, but also encourage the spread of new technology. Consequently, there is a generation of invaluable business networks with smaller firms.
