Citizenship and Dementia
The authors dwell deeper into the sociopolitical understanding of dementia discussed in the previous chapter. They attempt to relate the aspect of dementia and citizenship by building a clear understanding of social citizenship in relation to dementia. The chapter begins with an explanation of the traditional view of citizenship, before advancing to the emerging and contemporary meaning of the concept. According to Bartlett and O'Connor (2010), the concept of citizenship can be traced back to the French Revolution, which occurred in the 18th century. During this period, the idea of citizenship was linked to inalienable rights and equality. In relation to dementia, the traditional view fails those who are unable to fight for their rights. The authors explain how the aspect of citizenship is taken for granted and modified to fit a particular context in the dementia debate. Further, they offer a simple conceptual framework for dementia studies, consisting of six components; social positions, growth, community, participation, purpose, and freedom. This framework helps to address people with dementia as citizens with rights and competencies (Bartlett & O'Connor 2010).
