This assignment requires you to explore social or environmental sustainability challenges in business and society and address the following statement, "Anita Roddick (the founder of The Body Shop) blames the 'religion of maximizing profits' for business's amorality, for forcing otherwise decent people to do indecent things: 'because it has to maximize profits....everything is legitimate in the pursuit of that goal, everything.... so using child labor or sweatshop labor or despoiling the environment....is legitimate in the maximizing of profit.
It will enable you to:
-Use contemporary audiovisual technology to prepare and deliver an effective online presentation
-Present a convincing, clear and concise argument
Task Description
Prepare a three minute video clip or voice-over PowerPoint presentation addressing social OR environmental sustainability challenges in business and society, picking a for-profit company in line with the Anita Roddick statement (above).
Start by defining what Roddick meant by the above statement. Next, identify and describe at least one activity of the business you have chosen that matches Roddick's statement. Then from your knowledge acquired throughout the course, using credible academic sources such as your text-book and e-readings, discuss (a) how the businesses is acting in ways that Roddick is concerned with, (b) what, if anything, the business has done to improve its practices, and (c) what further recommendations you would make that the business could do.
Note: Students only have to choose either Social or Environmental sustainability and are NOT required to do both.
For the purpose of this assignment a business organisation is defined as a for-profit enterprise. Not-for-profits, government and NGO organisations cannot be considered for this assignment. The chosen business organisation can be either global, from your home country, or Australian specific.
