2. Executive Summary
Short-term greed is associated with the pursuit for profits, but sometimes there is disregard for ethical conduct. In organizations experiencing fraud and unethical conduct there is often lack of integrity, objectivity and professional competence. The aim of the study is to evaluate how leadership influences corporate culture and ethical misconduct. Corporation culture is unique to organisations and there is expectation that employees uphold integrity, professionalism and be objective. The leaders influence corporate culture and ethical behaviour, and researchers have linked organisational culture with (un)ethical conduct. Enron, Salomon Brothers and the case of the National Australia Bank highlight that leaders need to emphasize ethical conduct and practice this to impart positively on the corporate culture. The qualitative research is utilised in the case studies of Enron, Salomon Brothers and the case of the National Australia Bank. There is emphasis on virtue ethics and the Schein framework to evaluate how the leaders and corrupt corporate culture were linked. Utilitarian theories and virtue ethics are highlighted as they are relevant in ethical-decision making. Content analysis of reports on the cases provides insights on how the corporate culture influences ethical conduct. The managers were preoccupied with short-term profits and their conduct signalled that unethical behaviour was acceptable.
