POLS 333Final Assignment – F19•       Op-ed style: 500/800 words•       Deadline: Dec. 12•       Answer either:1. In order to save humanity, should we all become vegan?2. Regarding food and Brexit, how doomed is Britain?3. Meat tax, soda tax, straw bans…: what alternatives – if any - to perceived punitive policies?4. Should the UN create a registry of “endangered food”? Bonus point: share your favorite recipe (below is mine.)  Footnotes & bibliography: Chicago styleUse data: look for…databasesAs usual, bibliography should show that you are a creative researcherGoal: make a one-sided argument: Britain is completely doomed/much better off out of the EU. No passive voice Tone: use humor and stimulating “facts” in order to convince everybody that you have superior argumentative skills è should be easy to “digest” and not “hard to swallow.” Yes, titles with dad-jokes puns will get an extra-point (apart from “food for thought” which should remain in the composter.) Submission: hardcopy, DM-208 door bin.   Tarte Tatin:You need a skillet that goes into the oven e.g. not with some plastic bits.
 Ingredients:
-       Some very firm apples such as Honey Crisp/Granny Smith (enough to fit into your pan)
-       Some sugar (enough to have good caramel)
-       Some butter (there is never enough)
-       Some flour (will talk about that later)
First peel, core, and slice into two your apples. Fit them upright in the pan in concentric circles. If you don’t have enough apples, go buy some more.
Take the apples out of the skillet.
Preheat oven to your normal baking temperature.
Add some sugar, roughly 2/3 of cup, to the skillet and some bits of butter and a tiny tiny bit of water. Heat the skillet on the stove to make a caramel (don’t use a spoon or worse such as fingers!), just move the skillet. Stop the caramel to the color that you like (I like it deep brown but not black.)
Then add the apples to the skillet in concentric circles and cook in the oven for a good twenty minutes.
Meanwhile: Make a short crust that will cover the skillet. Short crust: 2/3 flour for 1/3 of butter. A regular sized skillet will need: 200 gr of flour for 100 gr of butter. Work the flour into the butter with your fingers then add a little bit of water and a tiny tiny bit of salt in order to have a firm ball.
Then roll your short crust onto the top of apple: it should cover everything, slide the extra crust into the inside of the skillet. Then make some little holes so that those poor little apples can breath.
Alright, back to the oven for a good 30 minutes until the crust is cooked.
Here is the fun part: take the skillet off the oven. Then put a plate on top of it and…reverse it. That’s it. Should be eaten hot/warm with some crème fraîche mixed with vanilla sugar. Beat any apple pie.

Being vegan was once an individual choice, but today it has become a necessity. In 2017, the sale of vegan products jumped by 86 percent in the United States, Canada, and France. On the other hand, the sale of meat products or fish has decreased globally. This clearly proves that more and more people have started becoming vegans. It is not because they are unhealthy or dislike meat products; it is because they have the idea that this can save our planet and humanity as a whole.
Besides being fashionable, a vegetarian diet is a response to the environmental crisis. It should be noticed that livestock is responsible for up to 20 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. When cows, goats, poultry or buffaloes are made a part of our diets, it may never be possible for us to continue living in a healthy, peaceful and sustainable environment. Sooner or later the shortage of these animals will disturb the entire ecosystem.
When we become vegans, we not only contribute to a friendly environment but also can improve our health to a great extent. This is because we can lower our risks for heart diseases and diabetes. Both of these are among the most critical or chronic medical conditions. Nobody would like to suffer from heart diseases or diabetes, and the best way to prevent these illnesses is changing our lifestyle and eating habits. By replacing meat products with vegetables, it is possible for us to maintain our health for a long.
Another reason for being a vegan is that we can stay s...
