Challenges designers of unbuilt sustainable projects are likely to encounter and ways to address them.
In project management, the future is always uncertain due to many external and internal factors beyond the control of the project managers, project engineers, contractors, and designers (Senaratne and Sexton 2011). However, a designer can minimize the occurrence of challenges that can derail the project or stop it and increases the chances of finishing the project. Some of the likely factors that a designer should always look out for are described here below and possible measures to counter them.
Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, etc. can have a detrimental effect on a sustainable project. Since sustainable projects are designed to last a long time, the project should be able to withstand them throughout its lifespan. Any unbuilt project should not be approved for construction if it does not meet the minimum requirements for safety against natural disaster during and after construction. Any possible occurrence of a natural disaster can destroy the progress of a project completely or set it back for a while. As a designer, you need to factor in the possible natural disasters that can happen and come up with a design that minimizes the loss of project progress if it occurs. Therefore, designers can prevent loss of lives and property through setting up projects in places unlikely to be affected by those disasters i.e., raised places are unlikely to be hit by floods. Building strong buildings that can withstand earthquakes and heavy winds. Designing effective escape plans for buildings in case of an emergency. Having insurance covers for the projects is also advisable for risk management (Morabito 2014).
