Comparison and Contrast
The Sony Walkman and the Bicycles are both articles that show the way technology has an impact on the place of technology in the lives of people and the society. Their stories can mislead people if they are about neatness and stay on the surface of the issues that happen.
When the Walkman was invented there are ways that they turned to that relate to consumption being an important aspect of production. The bicyclist on the other hand is similar to a person who uses the Walkman anywhere because they both allow users to be anywhere while listening to music or riding the bike. In addition to this, the bike’s design is a representation of a good technological artifact. The Walkman users are able to use it in their convenient time so it brings comfort and this is what the bike provides as well. People were able to listen to music without disturbing others. According to Marx, production is… at the same time consumption, and consumption is at the same time consumption (51).”
The production of the Walkman is equal to consumption at the same time and each of them corresponds to their own counterpart. The Walkman was produced from the creation of materials and it continues on to consumption. In return, consumption becomes the reason for production because they provide products for individuals that use them. There is a similar concept in the article about bicycles because when there is a mention there about the time when General Electric Company attempted to introduce fluorescent lamps to the society in 1938, but this created a battle with other electrical companies because it is competition for them. However, the consumers were attracted to the fluorescent because they were modified for society. There is consumption here that lead to the production of the fluorescent and why it still exists today. The story was mentioned because there are issues that will be highlighted later on. “The fluorescent lamp was thus the product of complex economic power play in General Electric.”
