In today’s society, people’s identities are understood to be biological or “natural” rather than leaned behavior as viewed by anthropologists and other scholars. In the foregoing, the idea that identities are natural is problematic because it fails to capture the role of one’s environment in defining their identity. Concluding that people’s identities are natural means that they have to be uniform throughout a population, unlike learned personalities which vary from one individual to another. However, the truth is that no population will have perfectly consistent identities among its members.
