Sovereignty is a term used to describe absolute independent of a community or a nation internally and externally. With technological advancement, digital media has become a new way used to explore how sovereignty is exercised among indigenous communities, more so in the wake of colonialism.  The most important question to examine is what impact do digital media have among the indigenous population? Digital media have become an avenue for hosting dialogues outside the formal structures . Filmmakers have taken advantage of this channel to re-inscribe the dominant culture imagery and narrative representation of their sovereignty to reflect the reality of their cultural history. 
Films like Robert Flaherty's Nanook of the North (1922), present Allakariallak, an Inuit actor as primitive because he is seen laughing at the camera. The film deconstructs the expectations of the audience and is viewed as a misrepresentation of the Inuit culture  .  Indigenous filmmakers have produced films to challenge the dominant conception of the Inuit sovereignty.
