Assignment Instructions:

A major online magazine has asked you to review an episode of the Pirate History Podcast.  With over 250,000 listeners, the PHP is very successful, and the magazine wants to introduce it to their readers.

They’ve hired you as a historical consultant to produce a 1,600-1,800 word critical review of Episode 36, which attempts to explain why William Dampier became a buccaneer.  The episode covers the time period between June, 1674, when Dampier arrived in Jamaica, to August, 1678, when Dampier returned to England.  He would come back to the Caribbean to participate in more buccaneering raids – these are covered in a later episode of the Pirate Podcast.

In your report, you are required to summarize the most important aspects of Dampier’s story as presented by the narrator, and then answer the following questions:

  1. According to the podcast, why did William Dampier become a buccaneer?
  2. Does the podcast offer a convincing explanation of why Dampier became a buccaneer?  Why or why not?

-          For this question, discuss the following:

  • Is there enough context provided in the podcast about Dampier’s background and experience in Jamaica and with the log cutters?
  • Is there any information missing on Dampier that should have been included?  Explain.  (Use material from the readings by Preston and Baer to answer this question).
  1. What kinds of sources are used in Episode 36?  Are they legitimate and useful sources?  Are there any additional sources that should have been used?  (Look at the sources used by Preston and Baer to answer this question).
  2. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the podcast as a source for understanding the causes of buccaneering in the Caribbean?  Is it a useful podcast for a general audience?  Why or why not?

Introduction
The Pirate History Podcast, Episode 36: Gentlemen and Soundrels Part 1 by Matt Albers details how Dampier came to be a pirate. It starts by describing how he came to Jamaica and the ordeals he survived on the journey. It follows a short backstory of his life and why he had taken to go to Jamaica. Once in Jamaica, the podcast describes his adventures and how he eventually set out to become a pirate.
1 Why William Dampier became a buccaneer
Several reasons led to William Dampier to becoming a buccaneer. First, he was chosen by his fellow privateers to accompany them to sail out and look for the lost ships in the hope of recovering treasure in them. he was chosen for his naval experience, and the privateers group believed he had experience of naval war should the need for one arise. The group was made up of inexperienced sailors, and they needed someone with knowledge of the seas. The vast experience of naval war and navigator skills were important to the group of privateers who wanted to become pirates.
Secondly, Dampier had lost all his investment in logging wood. He had very few options for survival, especially as a wood logger. The hurricane had destroyed their investments and if he was confronted by the possibility of having to indenture himself again for a year to earn enough money to try his luck elsewhere. He dreaded indenturing himself, and he chose to take to the seas with the other would-be pirates to try their luck with them rather than returning to Port Royal to probably indenture himself to make a living.
2 Why the podcast offers a convincing explanation of why Dampier became a buccaneer
The podcast gives a convincing reason as to why Dampier had to become a buccaneer. There are several reasons to support this. First, the podcast tries to describe his past and his life. he is depicted as a man who had suffered while in Jamaica working for Heylar. The podcast also describes how Dampier had indentured himself earlier under William Whaley, who worked for Heylar, and he quit only after six weeks. He realized that life in servitude was not easy and he could possibly not manage. To compound his problem, there weren’t many choices either if he had to return to Port Royal. He had been there before, and opportunities other than those of indenturing self were not easy to come by. Thus, by painting this grim picture of Dampier’s background, the podcast helps to show that the options that Dampier had when the Terminos Lagoon expedition was destroyed by the hurricane helps explain why Dampier became a pirate. Therefore, there is sufficient information narrated in the podcast of Dampier that likely led him to become a Buccaneer. This detailed background builds up as to why the young Dampier might not have had many choices but to become a Buccaneer to survive.
The information left out on Dampier that should have been included
There is information that Albers as left out. Firstly, Diana and Preston's account of the same expeditions and adventures of Dampier in the same region and at the same period are more detailed. Diana and Preston have included more information on nearly any subject. ...
