Choose two objects in the current chapters in your textbook that are thematically related (landscapes, portraits, religious subjects, historical monuments, etc.).
Write an essay of at least 450 words using 12 point font and double-spaced text) comparing the formal treatment and iconography of each work. Be sure to identify each object by indicating the artist, title, and date of production. Your essay should address how similarities and differences contribute to your understanding of each work’s meaning or artistic significance. You should analyze these points: stylistic choices (e.g., abstract, naturalistic, idealistic, realistic), function or symbolism of the pieces (What were they used for? Do they communicate a message? Are they sacred or secular works of art), cultural context (e.g., how might the way of life at the time and place the pieces were created affected their function and style? Do historical events relate to the image or story depicted?). In addition, I expect you to refer to the course readings, including the primary readings I uploaded to BlackBoard, in the essays. You must cite at least one source that is not our text book.
Use Chicago-Turabian style notation for any sources that you need to document as references in footnotes. Double-space your text and list your name and the date in the header on the first page. In almost all cases, you should italicize the title of a work of art. Consult the Chicago-Turabian sample essay I provided you for more information concerning formatting. Include at least two illustrations.

Different paintings are done for different reasons. Each painting has a special purpose and meaning behind it. The painting in fig 1 below was titled Autumn Rhythm Number 30 was done by Jackson Pollock in 1950. It is a naturalistic piece of art that depicts nature. The work was a record of the process of “coming into being. It has a good balance between control and accident the Pollock often maintained in his paintings. The work was to capture the energy that nature has expressed in the painting as the autumn rhythm. The painting has a horizontal orientation and a sense of space and ground that further highlights that it only evokes nature. There is a level of complication and excitement when viewing the painting. It could be meant to send a message that never can be complicated to understand by exciting at the same time. It is a secular work of art with no major historical event attached to it. It appears to have been a random painting that can be used to explain the shifts that are witnessed in nature today.
The painting in fig 2 below titled To the Unknown Author was done by Anselm Kiefer in 1983. The painting is related to the Holocaust against the Jews during the Second World War. The painting pictures a concentration camp building which could be a crematorium given the smoke that seems to be arising at the background. In the ground, there appear to be blood and charred remains of people that have been murdered. The painting has all the bearings of a scene of a holocaust. The painting reminds us of how horrible the Holocaust was and that we cannot blame the current generation of Germans for what their ancestors did. The painting is more of a sacred piece of art ...
