History of Fashion- Little Black Dress
In the history of fashion, a little black dress would be considered a precious garment that every woman would desire to have in their wardrobes in the 19th century. The color black would be associated with wealth as it would be difficult to preserve. The history of the little black dress can be traced back to the 1920s during the designing of Coco Chanel. However, the famous little dress was brought to light when it first appeared in a romantic comedy film in 1961. Audrey Hepburn wore the iconic black little dress designed in 1961 by Hubert de Givenchy in the opening scene of a romantic film titled breakfast at Tiffany's. This piece of art was made by a French designer who used Italian satin as the material for creating the fashion iconic dressThe floor lengthened gown was made with short sleeves. Ideally, the little black dress became more popular because it was carefully designed to fit the role of the character. The fact that it was matched with the elbow length gloves alongside the necklace designed by Scemama made it a great masterpiece. Audrey as an actress insisted that only her friend Givenchy could design costumes that would make her feel like the character. She assigned Givenchy as her designer in all her contracts. The little black dress was made in a simple cut with short sleeves and open neckline, accessorized with strings of pearls, gloves as well as an extra-large sunglasses. The character Golightly was brought out in Audrey’s little black dress. The piece of the little black dress designed by Hubert played a great role in the history of fashion. As much as there have been several other little black dresses made before, the one portrayed in Breakfast at Tiffany's made a breakthrough in the fashion industry. The level of exposure was high, and many audiences came to see and realize the beauty of a little black dress. The film brought the emergence and the designing of millions of other little black dresses. The much talked about dress brought various changes in the fashion industry as it cleared certain beliefs and perceptions with regards to dressing. The black color that was initially considered a color of mourning and could only be won in solitude was then embraced. The perception that the black dye was expensive and therefore owning a black dress would be expensive was also disregarded with the thought that black dresses could hide dirt and spillage unlike the other brightly col...
