Extra Credit Film The Great Gatsby Response History Essay

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment, you are required to view a film and write a 3-4 page essay (12 point Times New Roman font double-spaced) which includes an analysis of how costumes are used within the film. Pay attention to both the physical qualities of the costumes themselves, including things like color, silhouette, textile, accessories, etc, as well as how the costumes interact with the bodies of the actors (think about things like gesture and body movement, considering the medium of film is unique in capturing motion) and how the costumes help to develop/portray the identity/personality of the characters or relate to the plot of the film. Additionally, make sure your analysis also discusses how the costumes relate to the period of fashionable dress that the film portrays and the medium of film itself.
You are required to reference at least one of the class readings within your essay. Both the film and the reading(s) you reference must be properly cited within the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines in both footnotes and a bibliography at the end of your essay.

Released in 2013, the Great Gatsby is an American movie directed and written by Baz Luhrmann. Featuring Isla Fisher, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Elizabeth Debickhi and Carey Mulligan, the Great Gatsby is based on a 1925 novel of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story revolves around billionaire Jay Gatsby and his neighbor Nick Carraway, who encounters Gatsby at the height of Long Island’s Roaring Twenties. The film received worldwide popularity and grossed over $350 million, ending up getting two nominations (one for Best Costume Design and the other for Best Production Design). The inspiration for the film’s costumes and sets came from the British royal family and Old Westbury Gardens respectively.
Much attention was paid on designing outstanding outfits for the main and supporting characters of the Great Gatsby. Historical research was the key for Catherine Martin in portraying the story in an imaginary world. Catherine Martin previously designed the outfits and sets of Speedy (1928) and Sunrise (1927), and for the Great Gatsby, she came up with high-gloss Art Deco-suffused Greta Garbo classic designs. After watching the movie, I got to know that for the female characters of this movie, a wide number of prom outfits and green and red-sequined skirts were designed in a flapper style. At some places, they wore only a few fashion accessories, and at the other places, they were seen carrying necklace, earrings, and bracelets simultaneously, which were perfectly matched with their outfits and were chosen wisely, as per their size and skin color.
In order to leave a good and ever-lasting impression on the audience, a special sky-blue prom outfit was designed by designer Miuccia Prada, and Annaliese Treharne wore this outfit in one of the scenes of the Great Gatsby. Plenty of extras sported jewelry items, handbags, and headbands, which were chosen for the leading and supported characters too. In one scene, I could see Carey Mulligan wearing a much-publicized Tiffany & Co. A headband that looked good on her from all angles and added value and attraction to her overall appeal.
