Comparison of WORLDS OF WONDER IN THE NORTHERN COLONIES and WORLDS OF GOODS IN THE NORTHERN COLONIES
The two essays David Hall’s WORLDS OF WONDER IN THE NORTHERN COLONIES" P. 76, AND T.H. BREEN, "WORLDS OF GOODS IN THE NORTHERN COLONIES" P. 87 tackle the American history from two different perspectives. Their intention is to analyze how culture and identity came about for the Northern Colonies. I am inclined to Breen’s presentation of evidence, as Breen takes on a unique perspective on the pre revolution relationship between the British Motherland and the Americas. He suggests that the main problem is already present before one can be opened to a new view of the topic. Breen argues that the consumer revolution is the central notion that colonial America built its identity with its origins from the English Empire.
On the other hand, Hall’s argument centralizes on religion as a cultural drive. He summarizes this in 3 general facts. The first was an innovative characteristic of religion, such that as a “folk religion”. In the European perspective, it is understandably taken that there is a split between practice, in the situation of the peasants and those of the clerics. The peasants did not have the same avenues of learning God’s gospel than the clerics. They possessed cultural archaic folk religion which was only slowly opened to official Christian gospel. 1
.Breen’s argument is more convincing in the sense that he negated the myth that Colonial territories were self-sufficient as a society. 2 This theme reflects the theme of patriotic mythology This notion basically states that a group of people found a resourceful plot of land and made a society through sweat, hard work, and perseverance. This notion sounds dramatic and grand, but according to Hall, this is the number one problem to overcome.
