History 17A Winter 2019 First Paper Topic: William Moraley saw the British colonies from the perspective of a poor laborer. What was life like for bound servants and poor free workers in the colonies? Why did individuals in Moraley’s circumstances face a difficult time gaining a hold on prosperity? Writing the Paper Content: You should base your argument primarily on the text of Moraley’s account itself. By that I mean that you should not base your argument (or the examples you use to buttress your argument) on the Editors’ introduction to The Infortunate. Likewise, although you draw upon the Global Americans textbook, the Voices of Freedom reader or my lectures to help support your argument, you should focus most heavily on Moraley’s account of his own journey. Length: Your paper should be four pages, double spaced. (This is approximately 1200 words, for those of you more used to writer papers by word count.) This is a maximum, not a minimum. Although your TA may choose to read more than 4 pp. if you exceed the maximum length, s/he is only obligated to read the first 4 pp. of your paper. Style: This is an academic, analytical essay. This means that your paper must have a welldefined argument. You should also support it with relevant references to the reading. You cannot address every facet of these questions, nor can you recount every example. You will have to choose the best examples that support your argument. If you have questions regarding the style of a history essay, please ask me during class or ask your TAs in section or their office hours. Plagiarism and Other Academic Integrity and Misconduct: All of us at UC Davis take academic misconduct seriously. Bound Servants and Poor Free Workers in the Colonies
The poor labourers and bound servants working for colonies experienced various difficulties at work and also in their regular lifestyles. Most individuals, including Moraley, endured the hardships since they could not oppose the colonies. These people needed to sustain their lives with the little income earned from forced labour. Moraley reveals his pain when dealing with the colonies in various incidences. For instance, the poor labourers earned little money from the forced and more jobs dictated by the colonies, resulting in poor standards of living and pathetic lifestyles. Although the colonies at work oppressed Moraley and his fellow-laborers, they kept on working to fulfil their basic needs and sustain their lives.
Moraley experienced hardships in life as a poor labourer working for the colonies. The labourers would get engaged in various hard and tiresome tasks with an iteration of minimal amounts of payment. This context of work explains the origin of the name 'poor laborers' since the individuals could hardly satisfy their needs irrespective of their hard work under the rule of the colonies. The earnings could not offer the workers a chance to have a bit of a beautiful social life. Having the salary that could hardly fulfil their basic needs proves the hindrance of getting to the level of enjoying the social environment at any dimension.
