Michael Snow, born James Aleck, is a Canadian artist, musicians, and filmmaker. He was born in 1929. He is one of the most powerful artists in Canada. He also remains to be among the best and highly acclaimed experimental filmmakers in the world. Although he was visual artists in the 1950s, his reputation as an artist mostly developed when he moved to New York in 1962 with his family. He managed to build a strong foundation as being the most innovator in pop and Minimalist art as symbolized with his work the “walking woman” series and another film. Snow was a good conceptualist, who was able to create successful artworks from imaginary ideas. “The idea becomes the machine that makes the art: the ability and identity, if the maker was less important than the concept,” wrote LeWitt, a statement that has been proved by Michael Snow. The “walking woman” series is a conceptual work that has managed to capture the attention of a lot of people since its exhibition in 1962 in Toronto. At that time, people barely knew Michael Snow. Michael ensured that every art he made of the “walking woman” was in line with the prototype, whether it is a drawing, a painting or a sculpture. He stated that the “walking woman” series had nothing to do with either feminism or politics. Rather, he argued that the “walking woman” series was not a particular idea, it was just a drawing that he made, which he did not consider good during its creation. However, the “walking woman” series has managed to create a conceptual revolution of his entire career. Over the years, he has managed to improvise the variation and theme of the art so that it can fit in various environments, like Jazz music and filmmaking.
Since its creation, Snow has managed to do “walking woman” series in other art forms. For instance, in 1967, he managed to use the drawing a template to make a collage of the same. He also applied the oil technique and later made a sculpture of it using steels, which he presented at Expo 67. He also applied the ‘medium specificity’ technique to make a statue, which he placed in the subway, along with the streets and...
