What are the most fascinating aspects of contemporary Chinese art
One of the most fascinating things about Chinese art is that it has evolved to have its own identity. It cannot accurately be considered western contemporary art nor Chinese traditional art. It has become more of a bridge between traditional Chinese culture and western culture. A faction of the Chinese artist's avant-garde has redefined Chinese culture. They have infused different elements of western cultures into the traditional artworks and in the process developed a new unique artwork. CITATION Tsa11 \l 1033 (Tsao 2011) describes Chinese artistic work as ‘based on both Chinese and Western contemporary art discourse, share both Chinese and Western visual elements that are neither Chinese nor Western, because they result from the artists’ borrowing of different cultural presentations, displays, and cultural symbols.’ Thus, most of the contemporary Chinese artwork is a bridge between Chinese and western cultures. Since the 90s, Chinese artists seem to have moved from mimicking the west culturally and through infusing their own traditional styles, have created a new cultural hybrid. The new cultural hybrid celebrates Chinese art and its history and cultural connotations while infusing new ideas from the west.
Secondly, Chinese art is politically provocative. Years of Chinese political strife and evolution has modeled the artistic works of Chinese artists to become a new art form. The reason why it is partly not fully western is that it seems to be shackled by the politics of their country, which seeks to compel the artists to paint a good picture of the regime to the world. Thus, some artists seem to have toed the line, and they subtly promote the image of a developed China under the leadership of the Communist Party of China and its government. Artists paint a picture of a new country that has overcome the odds to modernize and alleviate the lives of its people. On the other hand, there is a group of artists who bring out the picture of an oppressive regime. They highlight the issues that affect the Chinese people under the socialist regime. Of course, these artists have come to be enemies of the state, and some have become political refugees to western countries where they have continued to showcase their work. They project these issues to the world through their works, and they have come to fuse Chinese art with western approaches, which has given their works a unique identity in the art world. Therefore, the evolution of Chinese art has a political provocation embedded in it especially from the artists who are free to work without the prying eyes of the socialist government.
Thirdly, a faction of Chinese artists developed a new trend to take on socio-political issues through their artistic works and birthed a new Chinese art movement known as cynical realism. Cynical realism has an ironic and humorous approach to issues affecting society, and they are detailed in art. Cynical realism is one of the ways Chinese art has evolved and assumed a new identity un...
