The concept of “appropriation” means to recycle, borrow, sample or to appropriate features of artificial visual culture. It entails the adoption of composited elements in the development of new work. In comparison, both Sherman and Levine rely on the appropriation concept, whereby the works of important male artists influenced them during the early 20th century. Both artists question how images have been constructed culturally and the impact of the dissemination on an age saturated by media. Both artists are replicating and copying the works of other male artists to create something different. In contrast, Levine’s work involves re-photographs of the photos by Edward Weston who focuses on the subject of a human figure. On the other hand, Cindy takes images which create an impression of voyeurism and mystery, vulnerability and melancholy. She was often involved in the creation of an object to create new personalities. The images are also generic since it may be hard to determine what is happening or where it was shot, and viewers can add their interpretation (see figure 1).
