Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and her son, the cupid of love, are the central motif of the canvas. In the portrait, the goddess is admiring herself in the mirror with her son, the matchmaker in the background. She is an elegant woman in her toilette tendering to her beauty in a kind of fantasy scene that is bold and exuberant. The colors utilized by Simon Vouet are what attract you to the portrait.
