Artist Biography Assignment (Nov. 15)


 


You will choose one artist from the list below and create an illustrated biography paper (for 15 points). For content, you can follow the example of Bihzad (from the lecture on October 25th).

  • Ibn al-Zayn – also Muhammad ibn al-Zayn (Metalworker)

  • Riza’I Abbasi (Painter)

  • Basawan (Painter)

  • Yaqut al-Musta’simi (Calligrapher)

  • Siyah Qalam (Painter or Painters)

  • Shirin Neshat (Contemporary photographer and film maker)

The biography must be:



  • 2-3 pages (double space),

  • in addition to a bibliography (Chicago or MLS style) of the three sources you used

  • Three illustrations of the artist work with full captions including the object’s museum url (and any additional comparative material)

What do we know about Basawan?
Little is known about Basawan’s childhood life but it is believed that he was most active from 1580 to 1600. His name suggests that he was part of Ahir (cow herding caste) which is currently known as Uttar Pradesh. Basawan was among the first Indian artists to be interested in western techniques after seeing how beautiful European paintings were at the Akbra’s court. He later worked at the Akbar court as a painter under the guidance of Abd al-Samad. During this time, he was recognized for the strength of his colors and unique features in the paintings. Although he was the designer in many of paintings, a second artist assisted him with colors. Basawan has over 100 paintings to his name with the earliest painting being an illustration of tutinama. After his death, he was succeeded by his son, Manohar, who was widely recognized for his animal paintings.

The author of Golsan Album is not known but the album consists of all paintings, engravings, and drawings done by Persians, Mughals, European artists, and Deccanis. At one point, the album was owned by the crown price of Tabriz.
