Marking Criteria
Visual analysis: The focus of this assessment is helping students develop skills of visual analysis. Students should provide close and sustained writing on individual features of the work.
Context: Students must locate their visual points with an understanding of the context of the work, and the period from which it comes. To be able to explain why an artist has done something in a particular way, it is necessary to understand how the work connects with the period from which it comes and what it is meant to communicate within a vocabulary of visual tropes. Visual and historical ideas should be interwoven.
Argument: Students should present a focused and substantial argument developed through critical thinking. Demonstrate a deep understanding of the work through knowledge of course materials. Responses should be brought together through a central concept that lends the response some kind of cohesion.
Clarity of writing: Aim for clear and erudite expression of ideas. State your ideas directly and concretely. Write in whole sentences. Employ a solid paragraph structure.

The Lacquer room is an artistic work created in 1936 by Grace Cossington Smith. The artist was born in 1892 and died in 1984. Throughout her life, she did plenty of artistic works, and the Lacquer room is the most famous among all. The artistic work is a painting which incorporates bold colors to bring out its beauty. The painting is inspired by the art design and colors of the David Jones café in Sydney. Grace went there to get some coffee and was amazed by the beauty and design created by the combination of white green and red colors. The painting was created in 1936, a time when Australia was recovering from the impacts of the great depression. During this period, the nation was going through reconstruction in an attempt to resume normal business activities. Therefore, this painting is a representation of the consumer culture as indicated by the inspiration from the department store. The bright colors are an indication of celebrating the new era, which marked the end of the depression period. Australia has a bright vision regarding the reconstruction of its economy. The painting is a demonstration of the modernist painter. This is due to the simple and flattened geometric forms of the painting and the rhythm created by the repeated shapes.[Back, Laura. In addition, scattered pattern and red color of the chairs have been contrasted with the green tables to bring out the beauty of bold colors. The chairs are characterized by beautiful curves and vertical slats which dominate the composition. The shape of the chairs is a perfect fit for the simple rectangle tables. The shapes create beautiful scenery for a normal café. The curves of the seats seem to be a complex pattern to create. This could be a representation of the economic struggles that the nation was going through during the great depression era. The simple shape of the tables could be a representation of the hope that they had in the reconstruction of their once-booming economy. The painting was inspired by a café, and this could mean reconstruction of the business world. In addition, the floor has a chalky geometry painting of faint colors. This shows that the impact of the great depression was still being felt regardless of the multiple efforts to reconstruct the economy. However, the faint colors used shows that the challenges were already being overcome and the nation was focused on the creation of a bright future. The painting also has sited and standing individuals. The standing individuals seem to be wearing a uniform, and this is an indication that they are employees. Given the era during which the painting was made, then Grace was creating the illusion of a customer-servant relationship. The sited individuals are in casual clothes hence indicating that they are the customers being served by the people in uniform. Some of the seats are empty hence indicating the chances of economic progress.
