Role of a technical work stream lead: a Workstream Lead is in charge of managing a work package within a given project. A work package is essentially a piece of the project scope; it is a convenient lump of the project that can be managed and completed by one party. A workstream is a collection of activities. The Work Stream Lead could be a specialist in the specific workpackage that they are managing. The test workpackage – test phase – of the project, for instance, can be managed by the Work Stream Lead. To be in this position, the desired and required skills include (i) experience with process and project management – design, analysis, development, execution, and change management; (ii) skills in statistical and data analysis within a business context. (iii) Skills in performance management, measurements, as well as reporting within a business context. (iv) Experience with managing and leading a project workstream or team, and knowledge of the industry. (v) Strong written, verbal, communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively and achieve results.
An example of an actual position is at Maersk Line for the Uptake Management Project. As the Workstream Lead on the project’s measurements and reporting workstream, the individual holding this position has several responsibilities including: (1) establishing and managing the resources, scope, timelines, and deliverables of the workstream. (2) Ensuring that the goals and desired outcomes, timelines, benefits, and measurements of the workstream are in proportion to the organization needs as well as objectives. (3) Preparing resource and work plans for every phase of the workstream, and (4) be able to inspire and motivate colleagues in the workstream and across the project workstreams (Maersk Line, 2014).
Science and technology: in the contemporary world, the terms science and technology are related and highly intertwined. With science, the goal is basically to understand the natural world and is aimed at creating theories whereas with technology, the goal is mainly to solve human problems and satisfy perceived human needs and wants, and is aimed at creating solutions (Dugger, 2009). Science is a system used to acquire knowledge basing upon scientific method, and the organized body of knowledge that is obtained via such research. The term technology is extensive and deals with the knowledge and utilization of crafts and tools; it is a consequence of engineering and science. Technology may also refer to the material objects utilized by humankind, for instance utensils, hardware, or machines, but may as well include wider themes such as techniques, methods of organization, and systems. The term technology may either be applied in general, or to particular areas such as state-of-the-art technology, medical technology, or construction technology. Science and technology are similar considering that technology is essentially about applying science, and science entails applying technology (Dugger, 2009).
