Technology plays many significant roles in peoples the day- to-day life. However, the introduction of technologies, particularly information system poses several disadvantage in people’s livelihood. Since information systems operates in the principle of automation, it has led to elimination of of many jobs that were previously performed by people, a phenomenon as structural unemployment. Erik Brynjolfsson, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management argued that the impressive and gradual advancement in computer technology have increased the automation of jobs through designing of industrial robotics, hence reducing reducing the need for human capital in many jobs today (Ford, 2015). Brynjolfsson even express his fears for workers since foresee dismal situations for many type of jobs as the rapid and powerful technological advancement are replacing human power not only in the processing, clerical and retail jobs, but also in professionals such as medicine, law, education and financial services. A study by Oxford University in 2016 revealed that 21% of today’ jobs can be automated and a possible increase to 47% over the next two decades. This is worrying trend due to the he increasing number of graduates every year.
Powerful and new technologies have been eliminating jobs faster more than they have been creating, causing the stagnation of the median income and growth of inequality of many parts of the world, especially in the Europe and the United States. Many business are quick to install robotics, software and programs in the name of improving efficiency, cutting labour cost and matching the ISO trending business environment. Nonetheless, productivity will continue to increase due to the efficiency brought by technology but there unemployment will continue to rise as well (Woirol, 2012).
