The OSI initials stand for Open Systems Interconnection. It is commonly used as the reference tool for network communication between devices. The OSI model is made up of a number of layers, seven to be specific, whose purpose s is to necessitate communication between devices located over a network. For example, whereas one layer might function to establish a link between two or more devices hence communication, the other might function to check for any bottlenecks within the network that might lead to communication errors. The seven layers of the model are the physical, network, data link, transport, session, presentation and application layers.
The network layer provides the link between two endpoints on the network. It established the connection between them, thereby establishing a channel through which communication can occur between them. This is done through the allocation of logical or network addresses to each of the data packets being conveyed over the network (Wetteroth, 2002). The transport layer of the OSI layer has a number of roles. The transport layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model usually ensures that there is a seamless or flawless transfer of messages from one end to the other, by checking for any errors or impediments to data flow. It is also the role of the OSI layer to multiplex, hence playing a role in multitasking.
