Network Manager and Systems Administration
The functions of system administration and those of network administration might overlap. However, a network manager is more specialized. Smaller companies will normally employ only a systems administrator, but bigger corporations are inclined to use both a system administrator and a network manager. In this paper, the question as to why network administration and systems administration are distinguished is addressed in an in-depth manner. Thesis: we distinguish between network administration and system administration in order to identify the various, different roles that each does or is expected to do, as well as to know the qualifications that one is required to have in order to be either a systems administrator or network manager.
Morgan (2011) stated that networking is the technology used to interconnect computing devices to enable the flow of information between them. This comprises activities as straightforward as topology design, and activities as intricate as the configuration of protocols as well as services so as to enable a whole intranet plus the support of that environment. Whilst all that data will sooner or later get to the user, it spends a large proportion of its time on numerous interconnected servers. Systems administration entails the designing, installation, configuration, operation as well as supporting of these servers (Morgan, 2011). Networking professionals have to be conversant and well-informed in considering when to utilize a private or pubic cloud, when to employ virtual or physical servers, in addition to other major security, reliability, as well as performance issues (Zilora, 2013). We basically distinguish between systems administration and network administration in order to understand the various, different job responsibilities and duties of each of these two. Secondly, we distinguish in order to understand the requirements for being a network manager or systems administrator. The different duties and responsibilities that distinguish network managers from systems administration are described below:
Network Manager
Network administrators basically maintain network infrastructure for instance routers and switches, and diagnose problems with these or using the behavior of network-attached computers. Generally, network managers oversee the administration, design as well as installation of computer systems within a business organization. The individual holding this position has to be technically-minded, with good Information Technology skills. A network manager also needs to be able communicate properly and have the ability to take decisions.
