Introduction
Maintenance Management and Risk Assessment
Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) comprises hardware and software solution package that allows one to manage maintenance of equipment and facilities. CMMS is used to improve productivity, cut down overall costs of operations, and store data concerning maintenance functions in an organization. They are used to record, manage and communicate their daily operations. The system provides information that can be used in preparing of the ship’s key performance indicators to use in assessing the effectiveness of current operations.
The data obtained here helps the ship owners to plan for routine maintenance early enough in an effort to ensure that the ship is kept in the best condition and eliminate the chances of the equipment failing. The data obtained here emphasizes on analyzing the performance of the ship. The CMMS keeps track of the ship operation hours (the time the ship is in actual use). Using the information obtained, different performance indicators of the ship can be calculated. These can be factors such as average time between failures. The ship owners can then adjust their maintenance practices on the basis of real experience. For instance, if the manufacturer of the ship suggests a given maintenance program, but the experience after analysis of the data provide by CMMS indicate that another maintenance program offers the best balance between reliability and costs, the ship owner can change its planned maintenance schedule on the ship to utilize this information.
