Definition of a Database and Knowledge-based System
A database is a collection of data or information organized for rapid search and retrieval, especially by a computer. Databases are structured to facilitate storage, retrieval, modification, and deletion of data in conjunction with various data-processing operations
(Silberschatz, et al. 2011). A database consists of a file or set of files that can be broken down into records, each of which consists of one or more fields. Fields are the basic units of data storage. Users retrieve database information primarily through queries. Using keywords and sorting commands, users can rapidly search, rearrange, group, and select the field in many records to retrieve or create reports on particular aggregates of data according to the rules of the database management system being used (Silberschatz, et al. 2011).

A knowledge based system is a computer program that uses knowledge to solve complex problems. The knowledge is gained using various knowledge representation techniques rules, scripts and frames. Knowledge based systems enhances the expert system technology into a decision making framework. It is important to note that expert systems were the first knowledge-based systems. Researchers have perfected the tools and techniques used in expert systems to deduce decision making influences based on knowledge codification (Rajendra & Priti, 2010).
Difference between of a Database and Knowledge-based System
A database is mostly limited to the functionality of storing and organizing data. In contrast to that, a knowledge based system stores "knowledge" and is not limited on the functionality of merely storing and organizing data. A knowledge base go beyond that, and involve the data extrapolation for processing data into "knowledge" to be used in concepts, theories and decision-making. The knowledge base software program, in other words, learns to "think" or processing information into thoughts
