** do not include a cover page**
Prepare a blog entry that discusses your own experience and applies the background material to the prospect of becoming a telecommuter.
For an overview of some important current issues in telecommuting and working remotely please read:
Peck, E. (2015, March 18). Proof that working from home is here to stay: Even Yahoo still does it. Huffington Post. Retrieved from http://www(dot)huffingtonpost(dot)com/2015/03/18/the-future-is-happening-now-ok_n_6887998.html
In the background materials, you read about some very traditional theories of motivation such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory. There is sometimes a challenge in applying these theories.
Begin with some personal reflection. Consider a time at work when you felt highly motivated. Apply Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory to your situation. Think about what motivates you personally. Can you apply Maslow’s and Herzberg’s theories to yourself? For this assignment, you will discuss these ideas in a hypothetical situation in which you are offered the opportunity to work remotely, that is, telecommute to your job.
For this Module 2 Case Assignment, you will prepare a blog entry with the title:
My company has offered me a chance to work remotely. Should I telecommute? How can I stay motivated working from home? If I decide to work from home, what can my company do to help me stay highly motivated?
Your blog entry should discuss the following:
• What motivates you?
• How do Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory explain your own and other employees’ motivation?
• How can employees remain highly motivated when telecommuting? What can they do to motivate themselves? What can the company do to motivate telecommuting employees?
• Will you become a telecommuter? Why or why not?
What is a blog assignment? A blog is like a conversation between you and the world. It is like having a conversation just with yourself, too. In this particular blog, you are given questions that you are to respond to in your blog (conversation). Like a regular essay assignment, your blog entry will have cover and reference pages.
Your blog entry should be the equivalent of a 3-page paper. Also, be sure to use in-text citations and a reference list, with at least 2 scholarly references for support. You can write the blogs in first person since the assignment is not an essay paper. Each entry should have a heading to separate it from the next entry.

Factors of My Motivation
There are a number of factors that motivate me. There are different times when one loves to arrange these motivational factors in order of their preference. Motivation is a feeling which makes me chase a certain goal, or achieve a target, predetermined by myself or others (Organizational Behavior, 2017). The biggest motivation for me is a mix of financial incentives and a healthy workplace which values employees’ ideas and opinions. When it really becomes important for one’s effort to get reflected in the paycheck, it is also important to get a warm tap on the shoulder when an assignment is completed duly with its requirements completely fulfilled. However, sometimes, it tends to become difficult to keep oneself motivated and on track while working as a telecommuter. When I was first given the option to work as a telecommuter, the option tempted me for a while. It looked attractive to know that I would not have to wake up at 8:00 am in the morning, travel to work and cross the killing traffic and then get marked late even if the elevator caused me trouble. But, when I practically started telecommuting, power and internet issues overthrew all other advantages of working from home. Then, working in solitude and seclusion, when sometimes wanting others opinions also came out as a potential inhibitor to my motivation. This was when I realized that financial incentives, and healthy work culture, with some sharp colleagues around, worked best for me in terms of motivation.
Different Theories, Me and Employee’s Motivation
Herzberg’s two-factor Theory
The two-factor theory discusses two major factors of workplaces – the hygiene factors and the motivating factors. While first ones are necessary for a healthy and conducive work environment, the latter help retain employees in the company (Alanis Business Academy, 2013). For example, no employee would work for a company that doesn’t pay them a salary, or any other sort of financial incentive (except voluntary services where terms are different). Similarly, all employees need a secure place to work, they need guidance and supervision and also require policies so that all employees are treated fairly. Growth, achievement and recognition are treated secondary in this theory and are present in an organization to motivate the employees. Most employees like to be appreciated and encouraged when they contribute in terms of sales, presentations or even ideas. So, Herzberg’s two-factor theory works as a mainstream theory to understand employees’ motivation levels.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
One way or the other, Maslow’s hierarchy of Needs also says the same thing about employee motivation. In the lowest part of the pyramid, a human being’s physiological needs are kept. When we move on in the pyramid, we have factors like safety, self-esteem, love and self-actualization. This is how an employee starts his journey at the workplace. He looks for basic necessities and safety. His needs increase as in a hierarchy (Alanis Business Academy, 2012). After some time, he expects the management to appreciate him and give him a sense of belonging that he deserves within an organization. Usually, if the organizatio...
