Ever since the start of the industrial revolution, capitalism and its modes of production have continuously increased in scope until the time when it was embraced by the whole world in its hopes of continuous progress. However, as shown in the works of Marx and other scholars, capitalism has also its pitfalls such as alienation of the workers as well as an overarching stratification between classes in the society. Nonetheless, due to the advent of the internet, new solutions to such problems have emerged, while also espousing new modes of production within the society. One example of such is Yochai Benkler’s non-market peer production and user generated content. Benkler believes that through this mode of labor, end users could then reach more people, volunteer in intellectual labors, or give them new platforms in order to reach consumers directly, thereby increasing the flow and exchange of both commodities and information.
