Transplant tourism occurs when patients travel abroad to purchase and receive organ transplantation. People tend to travel abroad because the organ is not available or there is a long waiting line in their home country (Broumand & Saidi, 2017).
The main ethical issue that arises from transplant tourism is exploitation of the poor. While selling an organ is voluntary, it often limits autonomy especially when relating to the poor (Delmonico, 2009). For example, most transplant tourism sees individuals from rich countries seeking donors from poor countries. The poor individuals often have financial constraints such as debts that they may want to pay with the money they receive selling their organs. The lack of knowledge and inadequate consenting procedures results in exploitation of the poor.
A counter argument is that organ transplant can be performed in transparency ensuring the welfare of both the donor and receipt. Many organizations or vendors ensure that the process is conducted in a transparent way to promote integrity. In the process, the poor do not miss out...
