The self-concept of ethnic identity of an individual develops from the experience he gains from being a member of a cultural group and the value that is attached to the membership that person holds in that group. The value of membership is influenced by the degree of experience that the individual has been subjected to by the dominant culture. If an individual or members of the group that the individual belongs to are mistreated by the dominant group, they will have negative attitude towards their own culture. An example is the aspect of crime on the society. If children of color are involved in crime and drug abuse will determine their future identities with a likelihood of them being negative. While others will be well nurtured and turn to be responsible people in the society. Generally, the environment that individuals grow up in shapes their characters, which will be a reflection of their culture (Corey, 2004).

Both families and community as a whole are entitled to ensure that there is equality in all children regardless of their race. The family bears the responsibility of ensuring that children grow up in an environment that supports respect for all people while the community ensures that the children grows up in a society that advocates for equality among all the ethnic groups. A community that advocates for equality ensures that there is equal access to all social services by all ethnic groups. Access to all services will ensure that the children grow up in a community that ensures no race is given preference over others.
