After completing this week’s reading, address the following:
In Chapter 1, it presents that gerontologists are increasingly interested in life course and intersections of identity in relation to aging and later life outcomes. Explain why this is important.
In this course, we discuss those who are over the age of 55. In Chapter 3, the concepts of the young old, and old old, as well as the oldest old are presented. Describe who fall under each of these terms.
The Chapter 1 reading covers the various ways gerontologists perform research. Present at least three reasons why it is important for research to be performed on the demographic of those aged over 55.
Now it is your turn to perform some research of your own! Contact a person who would fall into one of the categories of old age (i.e., young old, old old, or oldest old) and interview them about how their lives have changed since they reached the milestone of being an older adult. In your post, include a brief synopsis of what you learned with regard to that person’s activities which may link to some of the concepts presented in Chapter 2: living arrangements, housing, illnesses, relationships (with partners and family), social support networks, specifics associated with race, gender, or sexual orientation, and employment situation. Based upon your Chapter 3 reading, which theory (or theories) provides the best theoretical framework for understanding the process of aging for the person that you interviewed? Theories of Aging the Life Course
In the recent past, the life course concept has gained substantial admiration in the behavioral and social sciences. It is indeed the new wave concerned with the study of human development and aging, which makes it a dynamic and heterogeneous phenomenon (Alwin, 2012). Life course has been characterized in different forms as a paradigm or theory. Studies indicate that life course dwells on the fact that the developmental changes inherent in human behavior, begins at conception to death, as shaped by social, biological, historical, psychological and influential factors, which are evolutionary (Alwin, 2012). This paper seeks to explain the underlying theories behind aging in humans and offer an explanation for the transition in behavior as people age.
The concept of lifespan development has been instrumental to researchers in trying to understand how the developmental ontogeny interacts with the social environment, interrelated social settings, cultural and multilayered social contexts. According to Fries et al, (2000) the young olds are aged between 65 and 74 years, the middle-aged are between 75 and 84 years whereas the oldest olds are aged 85 years and over. Research indicates that at age 80 and above, there is a high prevalence of adverse conditions. Though there has been no much research on the condition of those above ninety years, the functioning of the body tends to change slightly or not at all, especially in behavior, restraint use and mood though, a slope may be identified within this age bracket (Fries et al, 2000).
It is of utmost importance to understand the dynamics of age as the baby boomers become of age. Being over 65years, there are some implications for the governments, individuals and the society of this generation. It becomes easier to address the socioeconomic issues facing the society, once the information is known. It is imperative to note that age comes with its own challenges (Schoeni & Ostedal, 2010).
In the recent decades, there has been a rise in the scopes of older people residing on their own in most par...
