As a diagnostic tool, the DSM includes diagnostic criteria for mental disorders. In addition, it includes information such as prevalence, risks, prognoses, gender related issues and cultural considerations for these disorders. What role might this information play in diagnosis and treatment?

The DSM captures different disorders associated with excessive fear and behavioral disturbances, as people respond to real or perceived threats (McNight et al., 2016). The emotional response is associated with anticipation of threat, and there is fear, arousal to react and avoidance. Excessive worry that cannot be control resulting in restlessness, fatigue, and impaired concentration, difficulty in sleeping, increased soreness and at times irritability are symptoms common across the anxiety disorder spectrum. Anxiety may be induced, fear of separation, related to social phobia, trauma but is at times unspecified (Dziegielewski, 2015). The DSM-5 chapters capture anxiety disorders as a category that, and the manual removed obsessive-compulsive disorder. Separating anxiety into different categories makes it easier to diagnose the anxiety disorders and provide appropriate care.
When two or more anxiety disorders are related then the DSM-5 helps in identifying the symptomatic similarities to diagnose anxiety. Even though, people get nervous especially when they are in public, those with anxiety disorders tend to exhibit extreme fear and worry in certain circumstances or when they encounter some objects. As such, anxiety may be in the form of phobia, social anxiety or even panic attacks. When there is excessive worry and persistent thoughts on a regular basis that this affects a person’s life then this indicates anxiety disorders. The symptoms of anxiety disorders are mostly psychological, but individuals may also be affected physically for lack of adequate sleep.
