Essay Instructions:
Choose one (1) of the three (3) reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by major authors. Read the selections as identified with each topic below. Write a three to four (3-4) paragraph essay (250 words minimum) which analyzes the “surprise ending” of the reading selection. Topic Choices **Reading selection from Descartes' Discourse on the Method (Part IV). Descartes begins with a proof of one basic conclusion and ends with a proof of something much grander. Remember to focus on the surprise and point of realization, not the details of the philosophical argument. Read Part IV of the Discourse on the Method located at http://www(dot)earlymoderntexts(dot)com/assets/pdfs/descartes1637.pdf (then scroll down to Part 4, pp. 14-18). This is only four or five (4 or 5) pages of the larger work. For the reading selection you choose: 1. Thoroughly and clearly state in your own words the “surprise ending” in the reading you selected. Clearly identify the point in the reading when you realized that there were elements in the reading that surprised you. Not all of the surprises come at the end. 2. Thoroughly evaluate how successful the author was in convincing you to accept the validity of the “surprise ending” that was different from what you expected. ** represent the reading selection of my choice. Include an introduction with a thesis statement and a conclusion

SURPRISE ENDING Name: Institutional Affiliation Discourse on the Method (Part IV) Introduction In this article, Descartes takes consideration of the mental states that occur when we are either awake, asleep or in a dream, and that he attests have no truth substance in them (Descartes, n.d). The author of the material therefore embarks on a project aimed at testing the levels of truth in providing the existence of God and the human soul, an aspect that is based on the established metaphysics. Surprise Ending In establishing the existence of the human soul, Descartes takes pretense in order to prove that he had nobody and that there were no facts that would establish a place for him to be in, an aspect that proves his inexistence (pp.15) According to Dickinson (2015), the fact that he doubted the truth of his existence, the significant truth was that he existed (pp.332). This clearly depicts the element of surprise ending since the author establishes that he was a substance whose essence was simply to think, an aspect that depicts the consciousness in the mental states that does not need place and primarily depends on material things for existence (Bombała, 2014). One of the astonishing elements that surprise me is the authors view in attesting that the soul makes an individual what he is, an element that depicts its distinctness from the body. This therefore convinces my perception that the things we conceive may be considered as vivid truth since it is not difficult to determine the conceptions that are clear. On the other hand, Descartes takes a stance is establishing the reason why there is a difficulty in knowing the Godhead figure and in establishing whether a soul exists in God. This is attributed to man’s inability to raise his thoughts above things that are preconceived by their senses, an aspect that results from the thoughts that are influenced by material things that imagines, pictures and arrives at a conclusion (Groarke, 2015). My surprise is intrigued in the fact that the philosophers considered in their senses that nothing within their intellect was previously filled in their senses, an element that is purported by Guseinov (2013) to drive people towards funding God and the soul significantly a problem since the idea of God and the soul have never been instilled in our senses (pp.18). However, upon the certainty of God and the soul, Joullié (2016) alleges that it is easier for humanity to understan...
